History of United Arab Emirates
The coast of the Arabian Peninsula along the Gulf has been inhabited for thousands of years, with communities relying on fishing, pearling, trade and oasis farming. From the early nineteenth century, local sheikhdoms signed agreements with Britain, notably the General Maritime Treaty of 1820, and the area became known as the Trucial States. Oil was discovered in Abu Dhabi in the late 1950s. After Britain announced its withdrawal in 1968, six emirates formed a federation on 2 December 1971, and Ras al-Khaimah joined in 1972. The seven emirates share a federal government, with Abu Dhabi as capital.
