History of Jordan
The area of modern Jordan was home to ancient kingdoms such as Ammon, Moab and Edom, and later to the Nabataeans, whose capital was Petra. It came under Roman and Byzantine rule, then Muslim caliphates, and was part of the Ottoman Empire from the early 16th century until the First World War. The Emirate of Transjordan was created under British influence in 1921 and gained independence in 1946. Jordan took part in the 1948 war and administered the West Bank until 1967. It signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994. Jordan is a constitutional monarchy under the Hashemite dynasty.
