History of Lebanon

The coastal Lebanese region was the heartland of the Phoenician city-states, including Byblos, Sidon and Tyre. It later passed through Persian, Greek and Roman rule, and then Arab and Ottoman control, the Ottomans taking it in 1516. After the First World War, France received a mandate over the area, and Greater Lebanon was proclaimed in 1920. Lebanon declared independence in 1943, and French troops left in 1946. A civil war lasted from 1975 to 1990, ending with the Taif Agreement. Lebanon is a parliamentary republic with power shared among religious communities.
