History of Armenia
Armenia lies in the South Caucasus, in a region that was home to the kingdom of Urartu and later to Armenian kingdoms. Tradition holds that Armenia adopted Christianity as a state religion in the early fourth century. Its lands were later divided among Persian, Byzantine, Ottoman and Russian empires. During the First World War, Armenians in the Ottoman Empire suffered mass killings and deportations in 1915. A short-lived republic was founded in 1918, and Armenia became a Soviet republic in 1920. It declared independence in 1991 as the Soviet Union dissolved. Yerevan is the capital.
