History of Türkiye
Anatolia hosted early civilisations such as the Hittites and later formed part of the Persian, Greek, Roman and Byzantine worlds. After the Seljuk victory at Manzikert in 1071, Turkic peoples settled widely in the region. The Ottoman state emerged around 1299 and captured Constantinople in 1453, becoming a vast empire. Defeat in the First World War led to occupation and then the Turkish War of Independence from 1919 to 1923. The Treaty of Lausanne was signed in 1923, and the republic was proclaimed that October. Multiparty politics began in 1946. Its largest city is Istanbul.
