History of Georgia
In antiquity the territory of Georgia held the kingdoms of Colchis and Iberia (Kartli). Iberia adopted Christianity in the 4th century. Georgian lands were unified into a single kingdom around the early 11th century under the Bagrationi dynasty, which reached its height under David IV and Queen Tamar. Mongol invasions, Persian and Ottoman rivalry, and fragmentation followed, and Russia annexed eastern Georgia in 1801. A short-lived republic existed from 1918 until Soviet forces entered in 1921. Georgia declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 and is a republic with its capital at Tbilisi.
