History of Azerbaijan
The territory of present-day Azerbaijan was home to Caucasian Albania in antiquity and later came under Persian, Arab and Turkic rule. From the early nineteenth century the north was absorbed into the Russian Empire, while the south remained in Persia. After the empire's collapse, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was proclaimed in 1918, but the Red Army brought the region into the Soviet Union in 1920. Independence was restored as the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991. The post-Soviet period has been marked by the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict with Armenia. Azerbaijan is a republic with Baku as its capital.
