About Nowruz

Nowruz, meaning “new day” in Persian, is the traditional new year festival of Iran and many neighbouring regions. It falls on the spring equinox, around March 20 or 21, and has been celebrated for more than 3,000 years. It is observed in Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Central Asia, Iraqi Kurdistan, parts of the Caucasus and by Parsi communities in India. UNESCO recognises Nowruz as an element of intangible cultural heritage.

Preparations begin with khaneh-tekani (spring cleaning) and Chaharshanbe Suri, a bonfire night the last Wednesday before the new year. Families set up a Haft-sin table with seven items starting with the letter “s”, such as sprouts, apples and garlic, each symbolising renewal, health or prosperity. On the new year people dress up, visit relatives and exchange gifts; the festivities end on the thirteenth day, Sizdah Bedar, with picnics outdoors. The greeting is “Nowruz Mubarak”.
