About Pongal
Pongal is a multi-day harvest festival celebrated in mid-January, mainly by Tamil people in Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka and around the world. It thanks the Sun, the rain, the land and farm animals for a good harvest, and marks the start of the Tamil month of Thai. The name comes from the Tamil word for “to boil over”.
The festival has four days: Bhogi, when old things are discarded; Thai Pongal, the main day, when rice is cooked with milk and jaggery in a new pot in the open until it boils over, with cries of “Pongalo Pongal!”; Mattu Pongal, which honours cattle; and Kaanum Pongal, a day for family outings. Houses are cleaned and decorated with kolam designs, and sugarcane, turmeric plants and fresh rice are offered to the Sun.
