About Diwali
Diwali, also called Deepavali, is one of the most widely celebrated festivals of South Asia and its diaspora. It is observed over several days, with the main night falling on the new-moon day of the Hindu month of Kartika, usually in October or November. For Hindus it is linked with Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, and, in many regions, with the return of Rama to Ayodhya. Jains observe it in memory of Mahavira, and Sikhs mark Bandi Chhor Divas on the same days.
The central image of the festival is light: rows of small clay lamps (diyas), lanterns and strings of lights are lit at home, outside shops and along streets. The idea behind it is the triumph of light over darkness and of knowledge over ignorance, which is why the greeting “Happy Diwali” often comes with wishes for brightness, health and prosperity.
How Diwali is celebrated
- Cleaning and decorating the home, and drawing rangoli patterns at the doorstep.
- Lighting diyas and lanterns at dusk, especially on the main night.
- Lakshmi puja: a family prayer for prosperity and well-being.
- Sharing sweets and dry fruits with relatives, friends and neighbours.
- Wearing new clothes, visiting family, and in many places setting off fireworks.
