About Eid al-Fitr
Eid al-Fitr, “the festival of breaking the fast”, is celebrated by Muslims around the world at the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. It begins on the first day of Shawwal, which is decided by the sighting of the new moon, so the date differs slightly between countries and moves earlier through the seasons from year to year.
The day begins with a special congregational prayer, usually in a mosque or an open prayer ground, preceded by the giving of Zakat al-Fitr, a charitable donation to help those in need celebrate too. People wear their best or new clothes, visit relatives and friends, share meals and sweets, and children often receive gifts or money. The traditional greeting is “Eid Mubarak”, meaning “blessed Eid”.
