About Holi
Holi is a Hindu spring festival celebrated mainly in India and Nepal, and by communities around the world. It falls on the full-moon day of the month of Phalguna, usually in March. The evening before, people gather around a bonfire in a ritual called Holika Dahan, which recalls the story of Prahlada and the defeat of evil. The next day is the day of colours.
On Holi people smear one another with coloured powders (gulal) and splash coloured water, dance to music, and share festive foods and drinks. The festival is associated with the arrival of spring, new beginnings, forgiveness and the end of winter, and in many regions with the playful love of Radha and Krishna. Playing Holi is about joy and togetherness, so greetings focus on colour, happiness and friendship.
How Holi is celebrated
- Lighting the Holika Dahan bonfire on the night before.
- Playing with coloured powders and water on the day of Holi.
- Singing, dancing and drumming in streets and gatherings.
- Sharing sweets such as gujiya and festive drinks such as thandai.
- Visiting friends and neighbours and mending quarrels.
