About Easter
Easter is the most important festival of the Christian year. It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his crucifixion, and it follows Holy Week, which includes Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. The date is movable: Western churches celebrate on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after March 21, while Orthodox churches use a different calculation, so the two dates often differ.
Easter services mark the central Christian message of hope and new life. Alongside them, many countries enjoy seasonal customs: decorated eggs as a symbol of new life, spring flowers, festive meals and, in Western traditions, the Easter bunny and egg hunts for children. Greetings include “Happy Easter”, “He is risen” and in Orthodox tradition “Christ is risen!”
