About Navratri
Navratri, meaning “nine nights”, is a major Hindu festival devoted to the goddess Durga and her nine forms. The most widely observed Navratri, Sharad Navratri, falls in the month of Ashvin (September or October) and is followed by Dussehra. A shorter spring festival, Chaitra Navratri, is also observed in many regions.
Celebrations differ across India. In Gujarat and western India, people gather in the evenings for Garba and Dandiya Raas, circle dances performed in colourful clothes. In Bengal and eastern India the festival is celebrated as Durga Puja with elaborate pandals and idols. Many devotees fast or follow a simple vegetarian diet, and each night is associated with a colour and a form of the goddess. The common greeting is “Happy Navratri” or “Shubh Navratri”.
How Navratri is celebrated
- Fasting or eating simple vegetarian meals during the nine days.
- Visiting temples and offering prayers to the goddess.
- Dancing Garba and Dandiya Raas in the evenings.
- Wearing a special colour on each of the nine days.
- Setting up a kalash and, in some homes, a display of dolls or idols.
