About Dussehra

Dussehra, also called Vijayadashami, is celebrated on the tenth day after the start of Navratri. It marks the triumph of good over evil. In much of northern and western India it recalls the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana, while in eastern and southern India it commemorates the goddess Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura.

In many cities, the festival is marked by Ramlila performances and the burning of large effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna and Meghnad at dusk. In Mysuru, Karnataka, Dasara is celebrated with a grand royal procession, and in Nepal the festival is called Dashain and lasts for several days. People exchange wishes, sweets and, in some places, leaves of the shami tree as symbols of goodwill.

How Dussehra is celebrated

  • Watching Ramlila performances in the days before Dussehra.
  • Burning effigies of Ravana at sunset, symbolising the destruction of evil.
  • Worshipping tools, books and vehicles in some regions (Ayudha Puja).
  • Visiting relatives, exchanging sweets and receiving blessings from elders.
  • In Nepal, receiving tika and jamara blessings during Dashain.
