About Makar Sankranti

Makar Sankranti is a Hindu festival that marks the day the Sun enters Capricorn (Makara) and begins its northward journey, a period known as Uttarayana. Unlike most Hindu festivals it follows the solar calendar, so it falls on almost the same date each year, around January 14. It celebrates the end of winter, the harvest, and the gradual lengthening of days.

It is celebrated under different names across the country: Uttarayan in Gujarat, where the sky fills with kites; Lohri in Punjab on the night before; Pongal in Tamil Nadu; Magh Bihu in Assam; Sankranthi in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana; and Maghi in several regions. Common traditions are flying kites, bathing in sacred rivers, eating sweets made of sesame and jaggery (til-gud), and greeting people with “Til gud ghya, god god bola”.

How Makar Sankranti is celebrated

  • Flying kites, especially in Gujarat and Rajasthan.
  • Eating til-gud and other sweets of sesame and jaggery.
  • Bathing in sacred rivers and offering prayers to the Sun.
