About Lunar New Year
Lunar New Year, widely known as Chinese New Year or the Spring Festival, marks the start of the new year in the traditional lunisolar calendar. It falls on the new moon between late January and mid-February and is the most important holiday in China, Taiwan and Singapore, and is celebrated in many forms in Vietnam (Tết), Korea (Seollal) and by Chinese communities around the world.
The festival centres on family. People clean the home before the new year, enjoy a reunion dinner on New Year’s Eve, give red envelopes (hongbao) with money to children and unmarried relatives, wear red, set off fireworks and watch lion and dragon dances. Each year is linked to one of twelve zodiac animals. Celebrations last about fifteen days, ending with the Lantern Festival. Popular greetings include “Xin Nian Kuai Le” and “Gong Xi Fa Cai”.
