About Buddha Purnima
Buddha Purnima, also known as Vesak, Buddha Jayanti or Visakha Puja, is the most important Buddhist festival. In the Theravada tradition it commemorates the birth, enlightenment and passing away (parinirvana) of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, all remembered on the full-moon day of the month of Vaisakha, usually in April or May. Other Buddhist traditions mark these events on different days.
Devotees visit temples and monasteries, listen to teachings, offer flowers, incense and lamps, and take or renew precepts. In many countries, such as Sri Lanka, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia, streets and temples are decorated with lanterns and lights, and people do acts of generosity and kindness. The lotus, a symbol of purity and awakening, is the best-loved emblem of the festival.
