History of Palestine
The region of Palestine has been inhabited since antiquity and was ruled in turn by many empires, most recently the Ottomans from 1517 until the First World War. After 1918 it came under a British mandate. In 1947 the United Nations proposed partitioning the territory, and the 1948 war led to the creation of Israel and the displacement of many Palestinians. Israel occupied the West Bank and Gaza Strip in 1967. The Palestine Liberation Organization declared a state in 1988, and the Palestinian Authority was created in the 1990s. Borders, status and recognition remain disputed.
