About Ramadan

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and the most sacred month for Muslims. During Ramadan, healthy adults fast from dawn until sunset, avoiding food, drink and other worldly pleasures, as one of the five pillars of Islam. The month is understood as a time of self-discipline, gratitude, prayer and generosity, and it commemorates the time when the Quran began to be revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.

Days begin with a pre-dawn meal called suhoor and end with iftar, the meal that breaks the fast, often shared with family, neighbours and the community. Many people attend extra evening prayers called taraweeh, read the Quran, and give more to charity. The month ends with the festival of Eid al-Fitr. The usual greetings are “Ramadan Mubarak” (blessed Ramadan) and “Ramadan Kareem” (generous Ramadan).

How Ramadan is celebrated

  • Fasting from dawn to sunset, with suhoor before dawn and iftar at sunset.
  • Extra prayers (taraweeh) and reading the Quran.
  • Giving charity (zakat and sadaqah) and feeding others.
  • Gathering with family and community for iftar meals.
  • Reflecting on the last ten nights, which include Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Power.
