About Savitribai Phule Jayanti

Savitribai Phule, born on January 3, 1831 in Naigaon, Maharashtra, is regarded as India’s first woman teacher and a pioneer of women’s education. Together with her husband, Jyotirao Phule, she opened the first school for girls in Pune in 1848, at a time when many opposed educating girls and members of marginalised castes. She faced hostility and abuse for her work but continued teaching and serving the community.

She also worked to improve the lives of widows, opposed child marriage and caste discrimination, set up a home for newborns of widows and, during the plague of 1897, died while caring for patients. Her birth anniversary is observed in several states as a tribute to her work, including as Balika Din or Women Teachers’ Day in some places, with talks, essay competitions and programmes in schools.
