About Gandhi Jayanti

Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated every year on October 2 to mark the birth of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, known as Mahatma Gandhi and affectionately as Bapu, who was born in 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat. Gandhi led India’s non-violent movement for independence from British rule through satyagraha, the Salt March of 1930 and the Quit India Movement, and his ideas of truth (satya) and non-violence (ahimsa) have inspired civil rights movements across the world.

The day is a national holiday in India. Prayer meetings are held at Raj Ghat in Delhi, his memorial, where devotional songs such as “Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram” and “Vaishnava Jana To” are sung. Schools and offices hold tributes and cleanliness drives, linked to Gandhi’s emphasis on sanitation and to the Swachh Bharat campaign, launched on October 2, 2014. The United Nations observes the day as the International Day of Non-Violence.
