About Republic Day (India)

Republic Day is celebrated in India on January 26 to mark the day in 1950 when the Constitution of India came into force, replacing the Government of India Act 1935 as the governing document and making the country a sovereign republic. The date was chosen because on January 26, 1930, the Indian National Congress had declared Purna Swaraj, or complete independence.

The main celebration is a grand parade on Kartavya Path in New Delhi, featuring the armed forces, tableaux from states and ministries, and cultural performances, followed by the flag hoisted by the President. A foreign leader is usually invited as chief guest, and the festivities end on January 29 with the Beating Retreat ceremony. Schools, offices and neighbourhoods across India hold flag hoisting and patriotic events.
