About Independence Day (India)

Independence Day in India is celebrated on August 15 and commemorates the country’s independence from British rule in 1947. It is a national holiday. On the morning of the day the Prime Minister hoists the national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi and gives a speech to the nation, while flag-hoisting ceremonies take place in schools, offices and neighbourhoods across the country.

The Indian flag, the Tiranga, has saffron, white and green bands with the blue Ashoka Chakra in the centre. People wear its colours, sing patriotic songs, watch parades and cultural events, and in many cities fly kites. Messages for the day express pride, gratitude to freedom fighters and hope for the country’s future, and the common cry is “Jai Hind”.
