History of Indonesia
The Indonesian archipelago was home to early maritime kingdoms, including Srivijaya, centred on Sumatra, and later Majapahit on Java. Islam spread through the islands from the late medieval period. European traders arrived in the 16th century, and the Dutch East India Company, founded in 1602, gradually established control that passed to the Dutch state in 1800. Japan occupied the islands from 1942 to 1945. Indonesian nationalists proclaimed independence on 17 August 1945, and after an armed and diplomatic struggle the Netherlands recognised sovereignty in 1949. Jakarta is the capital.
