About Teachers’ Day
Teachers’ Day is a day to thank and honour teachers for the difference they make in people’s lives. The date varies by country. India celebrates it on September 5, the birthday of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a scholar and former President who asked that his birthday be observed as a tribute to teachers. UNESCO’s World Teachers’ Day is on October 5, and countries such as China (September 10), Brazil (October 15) and Malaysia (May 16) have their own dates.
Students mark the day with cards, flowers, speeches, songs and small gifts. In many schools the older students take over lessons for the day, a tradition that is popular in India. Messages of thanks and respect are the heart of the day: a sincere note about what a teacher taught or how they inspired a student is often treasured for years.
