About Halloween
Halloween is observed on October 31, the evening before the Christian feast of All Saints’ Day. Many of its customs have roots in the older Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter, and in the Christian All Hallows’ Eve. Immigrants from Ireland and Scotland helped make it a popular celebration in North America, and today it is enjoyed in many countries.
Modern Halloween is mostly playful. Children and adults wear costumes, carve pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns, decorate homes with spooky themes and go trick-or-treating for sweets, while adults hold parties and watch scary films. The greetings are light-hearted: “Happy Halloween”, “Trick or treat”, and wishes for a fun, spooky night.
