About Eid al-Adha
Eid al-Adha is one of the two major festivals of Islam. It falls on the tenth day of Dhu al-Hijjah and follows the Day of Arafah, the high point of the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. It commemorates the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God, before God provided a ram in his place.
The day begins with a special congregational prayer. Families who can afford it sacrifice an animal and divide the meat into three parts: one for the family, one for relatives and friends, and one for people in need. Giving, hospitality and gratitude are at the heart of the festival. People wear new clothes, visit relatives and exchange the greeting “Eid Mubarak”.
How Eid al-Adha is celebrated
- Attending the Eid prayer in the morning.
- Offering a sacrifice (Qurbani) and sharing the meat with family, friends and those in need.
- Visiting relatives and friends and sharing festive meals.
- Wearing new or best clothes and decorating the home.
- Giving gifts and charity, especially to children and the poor.
