About Maha Shivaratri
Maha Shivaratri, “the great night of Shiva”, is one of the most important Hindu festivals dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is observed on the night before the new moon in the month of Phalguna, usually in February or March. Different traditions describe it as the night of Shiva’s cosmic dance, the night he married Parvati, or the night he is especially approachable to devotees.
Devotees fast, bathe early, visit Shiva temples and offer water, milk, bael leaves and flowers to the Shiva lingam. Many keep an all-night vigil, chanting “Om Namah Shivaya” and singing devotional songs. Large gatherings take place at temples such as those in Varanasi, Ujjain and Pashupatinath in Nepal. The tone of the festival is quiet, devotional and reflective, so greetings focus on peace and blessings.
