History of Thailand
Early states in the area of Thailand included Dvaravati and the Khmer-influenced centres, before Tai peoples founded the Sukhothai kingdom in the 13th century. The Ayutthaya kingdom, founded in 1351, became a major regional power until its capital fell to Burmese forces in 1767. The Chakri dynasty established Bangkok as capital in 1782. Thailand avoided European colonisation while signing trade treaties such as the 1855 Bowring Treaty. An absolute monarchy gave way to a constitutional monarchy in 1932, and the country took the name Thailand in 1939. Military coups have recurred in its modern politics.
