About Songkran

Songkran is the Thai New Year festival, celebrated every year from April 13 to 15, at the hottest time of year. The word comes from Sanskrit and means “astrological passage”, as the Sun moves into Aries. Similar new-year festivals are celebrated at the same time in Laos (Pi Mai), Cambodia (Chaul Chnam Thmey) and Myanmar (Thingyan).

Traditionally, people clean their homes and Buddha images, visit temples to make merit, build small sand pagodas and gently pour scented water over the hands of elders to ask for their blessings. Over time the festival has become famous for its joyful water fights, where people splash one another in the streets to wash away bad luck and cool down. Greetings on Songkran wish people happiness, good health and a fresh start.
