History of Cambodia
Early states such as Funan and Chenla preceded the Khmer Empire, founded in 802 by Jayavarman II. From its capital at Angkor the empire dominated much of mainland Southeast Asia, and Angkor Wat was built in the 12th century. The Khmer centre shifted south after the 15th century. France made Cambodia a protectorate in 1863, and independence came on 9 November 1953 under King Norodom Sihanouk. The Khmer Rouge ruled from 1975 to 1979, and the Paris Peace Accords of 1991 led to a UN-run transition and the restoration of the monarchy in 1993.
