History of Germany
Germanic peoples settled the lands east of the Rhine in antiquity, and the region later formed part of the Frankish realm. The Holy Roman Empire, dating from Otto I's coronation in 962, loosely united many German states until its dissolution in 1806. The Reformation began in 1517 and the Thirty Years' War ended in 1648. Germany was unified as an empire in 1871, became a republic after the First World War, and fell under Nazi rule from 1933. After the Second World War it was divided into East and West, and reunified in 1990. It is a federal republic with its capital at Berlin.
