History of Austria
The Alpine region of Austria was home to Celtic peoples and later formed part of the Roman Empire. The Babenberg family ruled the margraviate of Austria from the late tenth century, and the Habsburgs took control in 1278, ruling for centuries. Austria became the core of the Habsburg monarchy, which became the Austrian Empire in 1804 and Austria-Hungary in 1867. Defeat in the First World War ended the empire, and a republic was established in 1918. Germany annexed Austria in 1938. Sovereignty was restored by the State Treaty of 1955, and Vienna is the capital.
