History of Czechia
Slavic peoples settled the region in the early medieval period, and the Great Moravian state emerged in the 9th century. The Duchy and later Kingdom of Bohemia became a major power within the Holy Roman Empire, and from 1526 the Bohemian lands were ruled by the Habsburgs. After the First World War, Czechs and Slovaks founded Czechoslovakia in 1918. The country was occupied by Germany in 1939 and came under communist rule in 1948. The Velvet Revolution of 1989 ended one-party rule, and Czechia became independent when Czechoslovakia dissolved peacefully in 1993.
