History of Hungary

The Carpathian Basin was long home to Celtic, Roman and later migrating peoples before the Magyars settled there in the late 9th century. Stephen I was crowned king around the year 1000, establishing a Christian kingdom. After the defeat at Mohacs in 1526, Hungary was divided, with large areas under Ottoman rule and the rest under the Habsburgs. The Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 created a dual monarchy that ended after the First World War, when the Treaty of Trianon reduced Hungary's territory. A communist period ended in 1989, and Hungary is now a parliamentary republic.
