History of Romania

The lands of present-day Romania were once the core of Dacia, which the Roman emperor Trajan conquered in 106 AD. Later, the principalities of Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania developed, with the first two under Ottoman suzerainty. Wallachia and Moldavia united under Alexandru Ioan Cuza in 1859, and independence was declared in 1877. Romania became a kingdom in 1881 and united with Transylvania in 1918. A communist government took power after the Second World War and was overthrown in 1989. Romania joined NATO in 2004 and the European Union in 2007.
