History of Croatia
Slavic peoples settled the region in the early medieval period, and the Croatian kingdom emerged in the 10th century under Tomislav. Croatia entered a union with Hungary around 1102, and from the 16th century large parts came under Habsburg rule, while Dalmatia and Istria were long linked to Venice. In 1918 Croatia joined the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, later Yugoslavia, and after 1945 became a republic within socialist Yugoslavia. Croatia declared independence in 1991, followed by a war lasting until 1995. It joined NATO in 2009 and the European Union in 2013.
