History of Bosnia and Herzegovina
Slavic settlement in the Balkans led to the medieval Bosnian banate and, later, a kingdom in the 14th century. The Ottoman Empire conquered Bosnia in 1463 and ruled for over four centuries. Austria-Hungary occupied the territory in 1878 and annexed it in 1908. After the First World War it became part of Yugoslavia, and from 1945 a republic within the socialist federation. Independence was declared in 1992, followed by a war lasting until the Dayton Agreement of 1995. The country is now made up of two entities and the Brcko District.
