History of North Macedonia
The territory of North Macedonia lay within the ancient kingdom of Macedon and later became part of the Roman Empire and the Byzantine world. Slavic peoples settled the region in the early medieval period, and Ottoman rule, beginning in the late 14th century, lasted until the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913. The area was then divided among neighbouring states. In 1944-1945 a Macedonian republic was established within federal Yugoslavia, and it declared independence in 1991. A 2001 internal conflict ended with the Ohrid Framework Agreement. The country adopted its current name in 2019 following an agreement with Greece.
