History of Montenegro
The area of Montenegro was part of the medieval state of Duklja and later the principality of Zeta. From the late 15th century it was a mountainous region that largely resisted Ottoman control, ruled by prince-bishops of the Petrovic-Njegos dynasty from the 17th century. The Congress of Berlin recognised Montenegrin independence in 1878, and it became a kingdom in 1910. In 1918 it joined the new Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, later Yugoslavia. After Yugoslavia broke up, Montenegro stayed in a union with Serbia until a referendum in May 2006. It declared independence that June. Its capital is Podgorica.
