History of Serbia
Slavic peoples settled the central Balkans in the early medieval period, and Serbian principalities emerged under the Nemanjić dynasty, with a kingdom proclaimed in 1217. Under Stefan Dušan the medieval state expanded and was declared an empire in 1346. The Battle of Kosovo in 1389 weakened Serbian power, and the Ottomans took Smederevo in 1459, ruling for centuries. The First Serbian Uprising began in 1804, leading to an autonomous principality, and full independence was recognised in 1878. Serbia was central to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and later Yugoslavia; it became independent again in 2006. Kosovo's 2008 declaration of independence remains disputed.
