History of Slovenia
Slavic settlers formed the early principality of Carantania in the seventh century, and Slovene lands later came under Frankish and then Habsburg rule, which lasted in various forms until 1918. After the First World War Slovenia joined the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, later called Yugoslavia. It was occupied and divided by Axis powers in the Second World War and then became a republic within socialist Yugoslavia. Following a referendum, Slovenia declared independence on 25 June 1991, and a brief conflict followed. It joined the European Union in 2004.
