History of Slovakia

Slavic peoples settled the Carpathian region in the early medieval period, and the territory formed part of the Great Moravia state in the ninth century. From around the early eleventh century it was part of the Kingdom of Hungary, and later of the Habsburg lands. After the First World War, Slovaks and Czechs formed Czechoslovakia in 1918. A separate Slovak State existed during the Second World War, after which Czechoslovakia was restored and came under communist rule in 1948. Following the Velvet Revolution of 1989, Slovakia became an independent republic when Czechoslovakia dissolved in 1993.
