History of Liechtenstein
The land of Liechtenstein was part of the Roman province of Raetia and later of the Holy Roman Empire. The Liechtenstein family, an Austrian noble house, acquired the lordship of Schellenberg in 1699 and the county of Vaduz in 1712. In 1719 the two were united as an imperial principality. Liechtenstein became sovereign in 1806 with the end of the Holy Roman Empire and the creation of the Confederation of the Rhine, and gained full independence in 1866. A constitution was adopted in 1921. In the 1920s it formed a customs union with Switzerland, and it remains a small constitutional monarchy.
