History of Luxembourg

The area was held by Celtic and then Roman-influenced peoples before passing to the Franks. The history of Luxembourg as a state is usually traced to 963, when Count Siegfried acquired a fortress on the Bock rock. It became a duchy in 1354 and was ruled by a succession of foreign powers, including Burgundy, Spain, France and Austria. The Congress of Vienna made it a grand duchy in 1815, and the 1839 and 1867 treaties of London fixed its territory and neutrality. It was occupied by Germany in both world wars and is now a constitutional monarchy.
