About Hanukkah
Hanukkah, also spelled Chanukah, is an eight-day Jewish festival that begins on the 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev, usually in late November or December. It commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem after the Maccabean revolt in the second century BCE, and the tradition that a small amount of oil burned miraculously for eight days.
The central ritual is lighting the menorah (hanukkiah): one candle is lit on the first night, two on the second, and so on, using a helper candle called the shamash. Families say blessings, sing songs, play with the dreidel, and eat foods fried in oil such as latkes and sufganiyot. Giving gifts or gelt (coins) to children is a popular custom. Common greetings are “Happy Hanukkah” and “Chag Sameach”.
How Hanukkah is celebrated
- Lighting the menorah each night, adding one candle at a time.
- Reciting blessings and singing songs such as Ma’oz Tzur.
- Eating foods fried in oil, such as latkes and sufganiyot.
- Playing dreidel, the spinning-top game.
- Giving gifts or gelt to children and doing acts of charity.
