History of Denmark

Danish kingship consolidated in the 10th century, during the Viking Age, with Harald Bluetooth associated with the country's unification and Christianisation. Denmark later led the Kalmar Union with Norway and Sweden, formed in 1397. It adopted the Lutheran Reformation in 1536 and lost Norway to Sweden in 1814. Absolute monarchy ended with the constitution of 1849. Germany occupied the country from 1940 to 1945, and Denmark joined the European Economic Community in 1973. It is a constitutional monarchy, and its realm also includes Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
