History of Lithuania

Baltic tribes settled the southeastern Baltic coast in antiquity, and the Lithuanian state emerged in the 13th century under Mindaugas, who was crowned in 1253. The Grand Duchy of Lithuania grew into a large medieval power and joined Poland in a union that was deepened at Lublin in 1569. Russia absorbed most of its territory in the partitions of 1795. Independence was declared in 1918, but the country was annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940. It restored independence in 1990 and is a republic and a member of the European Union and NATO.
