History of Iceland

Iceland was uninhabited until Norse settlers, along with some Gaelic people, arrived from the late 9th century. The settlers founded the Althing, a general assembly, around 930. In 1262 Icelanders accepted the Norwegian king, and the island later came under Danish rule through the union of the Nordic crowns. Iceland became a sovereign kingdom in union with Denmark in 1918 and declared itself a republic on 17 June 1944. It joined NATO in 1949 as a founding member and is part of the European Economic Area. Reykjavik is the capital.
